The man behind the story
Keith Hayden
I've always been a creative person, but I never expected this story to take me as far as it has.The idea came on a bus ride in Korea. It was 2014, I was a Special Agent in the US Air Force with a ton of ideas, but no outlet to express them.5 years later, out of the military, my life was in a period of dramatic change.Writing reemerged as a vital form of creative expression (I kept a journal for 14 years, but had dropped the practice after leaving the military).Up to that point I had published a few blog posts online. I had also written my first book, but I had never written a novel.I didn't let that stop me from beginning the work on Cereus & Limnic that summer.I completed the first draft in about a year. That was the summer of 2020.With my brother's assistance, the novel was set to release in Jan 2021.But there was a big problem.I had no idea how to MARKET or SELL a book.I figured no one would read a nearly 500 page military sci-fi novel from a no name author with no audience or book industry connections.That's when I decided to begin recording an audiobook version of the story.I figured it would be another way for more people to access it.It didn't take me long to realize I would have to self-produce it (the cost for paying someone was ridiculous!)When I started, I had no idea how to produce a high quality podcast. I knew nothing about sound design, music production or graphic design.I barely had a presence online outside of my website after years of being warned of the dangers of posting too much personal information when I was active duty.But I kept believing in the message of the book and its characters.Through lack of experience, tech issues, a move to Japan (from California), publishing to an audience of one, and a 9-month hiatus, I pushed on to finish.I made something I'm ecstatic to present to you here.The quality of the show rose over time. I wouldn't be the artist-entrepreneur I am today without it.
From audio to AI, I've become a one man studio.I'm proud to say everything you've seen or read on this page (including the page itself) was created by me.My life has changed in many profound ways in the last 3 years.This story (Cereus & Limnic) has been there in the background all along.
